Construction of the sixth nuclear power station built in the UK started in 1980. The first of the two AGR reactors became operational in 1987 and the main construction contract was completed in 1989.
Additional works continue at the power station, situated on an 80 hectare promontory on Scotland's east coast.
With over 600 staff, Torness is one of the largest employers in East Lothian. The station includes a visitor centre, which shows how the electricity is produced and its role in Scotland's economy.
