Laundry
|
Each day Fernald's on-site laundry washes all the protective cotton work-suits of its 1,000 employees to rid the clothing of uranium dust. Laundry water must be specially treated because of its uranium content. In December 1984, a special Oak Ridge Task Force reported to the U.S. Congress that the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center had, during its more than 30 years of process operations, released a total of 374,000 pounds of uranium dust into the air and water around the site, and that another 720, 000 pounds of uranium remained unaccounted for.
