Mechanical Design Engineer IV

JOB DESCRIPTION

•        12+ Months (Contract Position
•        Working Model: Remote
•        Candidate does NOT need to be in ET time zone
•        Travel: Possibly travel once a year between US and Canada
•        Pay Rate: $95 - $115 (Dependent on Experience)
•        Working Hours: Flexible, 7am - 5pm EST
•        Interview Process: Virtual, 1 round, Panel interview with GEV Tech Leads

This engineer will play a crucial role in providing design engineering support, collaborating with vendor organizations to drive efficient Reactor Pressure Vessel, Internals, and Mechanical Containment Penetration design, manufacturing, and testing. In this role, the Engineer will develop design specifications, create, and mature design concepts, provide procurement support, generate drawings and design documentation, and provide testing oversight. This position requires interface with Business Project Managers, Technical Project Engineers, Sourcing, equipment manufacturers, and with engineering teams within GE and partner companies.

Essential Responsibilities

o Responsible for Mechanical Component Design activities that support:
- GE's existing fleet of BWRs and/or
- GE’s BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and/or

o Primary design focus areas for our Mechanical Component Design teams include:
- BWR Equipment Design.
- BWR Internal Components Design.
- Plant Servicing Equipment Design.
- Fabrication and Installation Support.
- Mechanical Component Testing.
- Demonstrates accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy of assigned tasks.

o Provide technical guidance and leadership, support project scheduling and resource planning, develop talent through mentorship, and act as the point-of-contact between your engineering team and both internal and external customers.

o Takes personal responsibility, understanding impact of design and associated risk.

o Considers customer needs and maintains open communication with interfacing engineers and project stakeholders.

o Operate in a matrixed engineering team to ensure high quality deliverables in accordance with customer requirements, business procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

o Leads the analysis, design, test, and integration of mechanical components and equipment required to define and support projects that meet business standards and program / product requirements.

o Performance of fundamental engineering hand calculations and modeling.

o Preparing and presenting design reviews and technical reports to internal and external customers.

o Lead/facilitate discussion and information exchange to promote open dialogue including working effectively in a matrixed team environment.

o Ensuring that product designs meet all intended application and design requirements by collaborating with experts in other functional teams.

o Work closely with Sourcing and Fabricators to provide technical support.

o Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business.


Qualifications / Requirements

· Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.

· Minimum of 8 years of experience in energy business (nuclear preferred) or equivalent technical environment

· Minimum of 2 years of experience in a program or technical leadership role

· Minimum of 2 years of experience working with customers, regulators and suppliers

· This position requires access to and/or use of information subject to U.S. Export Control Laws, which mandate all citizenships be from the U.S. Department of Energy’s List of Generally Authorized Countries (10 CFR Part 810 Appendix A); otherwise a specific authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy will be required. Additional Desired Characteristics

· 9+ years of experience performing independent, or preferably team based, component design of technical reviews including product requirements management, technical risk tracking/retirement, technical reviews, procurement, and fabrication support.

· 9+ years of experience with applicable industry standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, BWRVIP reports).

· Prior nuclear industry experience is highly preferred, including experience with technical support of Boiling Water Reactors (BWR), Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and /or other complex mechanical equipment design technical environment.

· Experience with Sodium Fast Reactor technology and design.

· Experience with Control Rod Drives or Fine Motion Control Rod Drives.

· Experience with Nuclear Core & Fuel design.

· Experience with the selection and use of lifting and rigging equipment including load path definition, alignment with ANSI and AMSE guidance and requirements, and safety factor determination.

· Ability to troubleshoot improperly functioning equipment and implement changes.

· Working knowledge of modern fabrication processes and practices.

· Familiarity with tolerances, jointure, welding, and material selection.

· Experience with a variety of fabrication techniques including conventional machining, welding, and EDM.

· Familiarity with Lean.

· Experience with Inventor, Inventor Vault, and product lifecycle management software.

· Strong interpersonal and proven leadership skills.

· Proven ability to think strategically, be creative, and work efficiently.

· Knowledge of Geometric Design & Tolerancing (GD&T) practices.

· Knowledge of the ASME/AWS codes.

· Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD design.

· Proficiency with ANSYS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) analysis.

Description of ideal candidate
The ideal candidate is a senior mechanical design engineer with strong nuclear experience (preferably BWR) who can independently lead component design while coordinating across vendors, regulators, and internal teams. They combine hands-on design expertise, leadership ability, and nuclear regulatory awareness, with proven experience delivering complex engineered systems from concept through fabrication and testing.
