Construction began in February 1943 under Stone & Webster, and the plant began operating in November 1943, using machines called calutrons. Y-12 separated the uranium-235 used in the Little Boy bomb, which was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Tennessee Eastman managed the plant until May 1947, when Union Carbide became the operating contractor. A criticality accident in Building 9212 on June 16, 1958 injured eight workers.
