A comprehensive nuclear agreement with West Germany was signed in 1975. Angra 1, a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor, began construction on 1 May 1971, reached first criticality on 3 March 1982 and was connected to the grid on 1 April 1982. Angra 2, a Siemens design, began construction on 1 January 1976, reached criticality on 14 July 2000 and was connected to the grid on 21 July 2000. Angra 3, also a Siemens/KWU design, was developed from 1984 and construction was halted in 1986.
