Sydkraft bought the land in 1965, and construction began in 1969. Unit 1 reached criticality on January 18, 1975, and Unit 2 on March 21, 1977. In 1997 the Swedish parliament decided that the units should close in 1998 and 2001, but the operator appealed and the closures were delayed. Unit 1 was permanently shut down on November 30, 1999, and Unit 2 on May 31, 2005.
