The Swiss authorities approved the island as a reactor site in December 1964. Two near-identical Westinghouse pressurized water reactors were built. Construction of Beznau 1 started in September 1965, and the unit was connected to the grid on 17 July 1969 and began commercial operation in December 1969, as the first commercial nuclear power reactor in Switzerland. Construction of Beznau 2 began in January 1968, and it was connected to the grid on 23 October 1971 and entered commercial operation in March 1972. In 1984 the plant began supplying the Refuna district heating system.
