It was founded on 3 January 1954 as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, under Homi J. Bhabha, and took his name on 22 January 1967, after his death. Research reactors built there include Apsara (first critical 4 August 1956), ZERLINA (14 January 1961) and Dhruva (8 August 1985). CIRUS, built in 1960 with US assistance, produced the plutonium used in India's 1974 nuclear test.
