Construction began in 1969. The plant had two pressurized water reactor units supplied by Siemens. Unit A was connected to the grid on 25 August 1974 and Unit B on 25 April 1976. On 17 December 1987 a valve that operators had overlooked left open caused a brief release of primary coolant outside containment, rated INES level 1. After the Fukushima accident, both units were taken off line in March 2011 under a federal moratorium and were permanently shut down on 6 August 2011.
