Groundbreaking took place in 1960. The reactor went critical on September 27, 1962, and was first connected to the grid on December 8, 1962. From 1971 to 1982 it produced cobalt-60 for medical use. The American Nuclear Society named it a Nuclear Historic Landmark in 1991. Consumers Power decided in January 1997 to close it, and the reactor made its final scram on August 29, 1997. The reactor vessel was removed on August 25, 2003, and shipped to Barnwell, South Carolina, that October.
