The estimated cost rose from $450 million in 1973 to $3.4 billion by 1979. On June 2, 1979, protesters climbed the fence around the site and about 500 were arrested. The utility canceled the project on February 16, 1982. Opponents, organized as Citizens Action for Safe Energy, spent nine years in court challenges. No reactor was ever built at the site.
