Ontario Hydro built it in stages between 1970 and 1987 as two four-unit plants, Bruce A (Units 1 to 4) and Bruce B (Units 5 to 8). All eight units are CANDU pressurized heavy-water reactors supplied by AECL. Unit 2 reached the grid on 4 September 1976 and Unit 8 on 7 March 1987. Unit 2 was taken offline in 1995 and Unit 1 in 1997, and Units 3 and 4 were idle from 1998. Unit 4 returned in October 2003 and Unit 3 in January 2004, and Units 1 and 2 were back on the grid in 2012.
