About This Site

Chapelcross was a nuclear power station about 3 km northeast of Annan in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. It was built on the former RAF Annan airfield and had four Magnox reactors, each rated at 60 MW electric, which were graphite-moderated, carbon-dioxide-cooled and fueled with natural uranium.

Construction began in 1955, and the works were officially opened on 2 May 1959. In May 1967, fuel in a channel of reactor 2 overheated after a partial blockage, and its cladding failed. All four reactors were permanently shut down on 29 June 2004. The four cooling towers were demolished on 20 May 2007.
