Construction began on August 15, 1972. Unit 1 was connected to the grid on September 26, 1977, Unit 2 on December 21, 1978, Unit 3 on December 3, 1981, and Unit 4 on December 22, 1983. On April 26, 1986, Unit 4 exploded and burned in the Chernobyl accident. Unit 2 was shut down after a turbine fire on October 11, 1991, Unit 1 on November 30, 1996, and Unit 3 on December 15, 2000. A large arch, the New Safe Confinement, was placed over the damaged unit in November 2016.
