Construction began on May 1, 1964. The plant had a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor and served as a prototype for Westinghouse's four-loop design. It was first connected to the grid on August 7, 1967, and entered commercial operation on January 1, 1968. Electricity production ended in 1996, with permanent shutdown on December 5, 1996, because continued operation was judged not cost effective. Decommissioning was largely complete by 2004, and demolition of the containment dome finished in July 2006.
