Ontario Hydro planned and built the station, with four CANDU pressurized heavy-water reactors supplied by AECL. Construction began on Unit 2 on 1 September 1981, Unit 1 on 1 April 1982, Unit 3 on 1 September 1984 and Unit 4 on 1 July 1985. The units were connected to the grid on 15 January 1990 (Unit 2), 19 December 1990 (Unit 1), 7 December 1992 (Unit 3) and 17 April 1993 (Unit 4). The project suffered long delays and a reported final cost of about C$14.4 billion.
