Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union ratified a contract for nuclear power plants in 1970, and construction at Dukovany began in 1974. The station has four Soviet-designed VVER-440/213 pressurized water reactors. Unit 1 was first connected to the grid on 24 February 1985, Unit 2 on 30 January 1986, Unit 3 on 14 November 1986 and Unit 4 on 11 June 1987. It was the second nuclear power plant built in Czechoslovakia, after Bohunice.
