Construction began in 1974. The single unit is a CANDU pressurized heavy-water reactor, built as a turnkey project by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, with the Italian firm Italimpianti responsible for the conventional part of the plant. The reactor reached first criticality on March 13, 1983, was connected to the grid on April 25, 1983, and was declared commercial on January 20, 1984.
