India's Department of Atomic Energy signed a collaboration agreement with France's CEA in 1969 covering the Rapsodie test reactor design. Construction of the loop-type, 40 MW thermal reactor began in 1972, and it reached first criticality in October 1985. It was designed jointly by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (renamed from the Reactor Research Centre in 1985) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Its fuel is a plutonium-uranium carbide mixture.
