Construction began in September 1968, and testing started in 1972. The reactor was first connected to the grid on December 11, 1976, and distributed first commercial power in July 1979. It was permanently shut down on August 29, 1989, after a critical reactor part needed an expensive replacement. Decommissioning and fuel removal were complete by 1992, and in 1996 the site was converted to a natural gas power plant.
