Construction began on 1 November 1959, led by the company Societa Elettronucleare Nazionale. The single reactor was a 150 MW General Electric boiling water reactor. It reached first criticality on 5 June 1963, was connected to the grid on 1 January 1964 and entered commercial operation on 1 June 1964. Power production stopped in 1978, and the reactor was officially switched off on 1 March 1982. The site passed to the decommissioning company SOGIN on 1 November 1999.
