East Germany and the Soviet Union agreed on the plant in 1965. Units 1 to 4 were Soviet VVER-440/230 pressurized water reactors, with construction starting in 1970 for Units 1 and 2 and in 1972 for Units 3 and 4. They were connected to the grid in December 1973, December 1974, October 1977 and September 1979. A fire in Unit 1 in December 1975 was not made public until 1989. Unit 5, a VVER-440/213, was connected on 24 April 1989. All five units were shut down between November 1989 and December 1990, and decommissioning began in 1995.
