The French atomic energy commission decided in 1959 to build the UP2-400 plant to treat fuel from gas-cooled reactors, and it started operating in January 1967. In 1974, it was authorized to modify the plant to reprocess fuel from pressurized water reactors. In 1981, authorization was given for two larger plants, UP2-800 and UP3, and a liquid effluent treatment station, STE3. These installations were commissioned between 1986 and 2002, with most process units entering service in 1989 and 1990.
