Degussa began nuclear work at Wolfgang after West Germany took up peaceful nuclear energy in 1955, and the company Nukem was set up in 1960. Fuel plants at Hanau made fuel for German reactors, including spherical fuel for the AVR and THTR-300 high-temperature reactors. Nukem ran a nuclear fuel plant at Wolfgang until 1988. A mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel plant stopped production after an accident in June 1991. A larger Siemens MOX plant was never used for production, and Siemens stopped making fuel rods at Hanau in 1995. The last unirradiated plutonium fuel was removed from storage at Hanau in 2005.
