About This Site

The Metropolis Works is a uranium conversion plant about 2 miles northwest of Metropolis, in Massac County, Illinois. It was built to convert uranium concentrate into uranium hexafluoride (UF6), the feed material for enrichment plants.

The plant was built in 1958 and operated that year under a U.S. Atomic Energy Commission contract. It was mothballed in 1964, rehabilitated in 1967, and began converting uranium for commercial customers in 1968. A UF6 release on December 22, 2003 led to a Site Area Emergency and the evacuation of personnel within one mile. In May 2012 the NRC shut the plant down to require earthquake and tornado upgrades, and production restarted in July 2013.
