The Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC) sits in the south-central part of the Idaho National Laboratory site in eastern Idaho. It began as the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant, built to recover reusable uranium from spent reactor fuel.

The plant was established in the early 1950s, with sources giving either 1952 or 1953. From 1953 to 1984, treated reprocessing waste was discharged into the Snake River Plain Aquifer through an injection well. The last reprocessing campaign took place in 1991, and the U.S. Department of Energy halted reprocessing in April 1992 for lack of demand. The facility was renamed INTEC in 1998, when its mission shifted to treating and preparing waste for disposal.
