Construction of the plant began in 1971. Unit 1 was a boiling water reactor, connected to the grid on 3 December 1977. Unit 2 was a pressurized water reactor of the Konvoi design, connected on 22 January 1988. Unit 1 was taken off line during the March 2011 moratorium that followed the Fukushima accident and was permanently shut down on 6 August 2011. Unit 2 was permanently shut down on 15 April 2023 at the end of the German nuclear phase-out.
