Construction began on March 1, 1963. The reactor connected to the grid on April 26, 1968, and entered commercial operation in 1969. It was shut down in April 1987 because its small size made it uneconomical, and it was placed in SAFSTOR on August 7, 1991. The reactor vessel was removed and shipped to Barnwell, South Carolina in May 2007. Spent fuel was sealed into dry casks in 2012, and the NRC approved final decommissioning in February 2023.
