Construction of Unit 1 began on March 1, 1970, and it was connected to the grid on December 21, 1973. On November 28, 1975, a fuel channel failure in Unit 1 partly melted a fuel assembly. Unit 1 was permanently shut down on December 21, 2018, and Unit 2 on November 10, 2020. The VVER-1200 units of Leningrad II began construction in October 2008, and the first was connected to the grid on March 9, 2018.
