Construction of Unit 1 began on 1 May 1971 and Unit 2 on 1 August 1972. Both are Soviet-designed VVER-440 pressurized water reactors of the V-213 model, supplied by Atomenergoexport, with Western companies including Westinghouse and Siemens supplying equipment and engineering to meet Finnish requirements. Unit 1 was connected to the grid on 8 February 1977 and entered commercial operation on 9 May 1977. Unit 2 was connected on 4 November 1980 and entered commercial operation on 5 January 1981.
