Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company was formed in 1966, and construction began on October 1, 1968. The plant used a three-loop Combustion Engineering pressurized water reactor. It connected to the grid on November 8, 1972, and was commissioned on December 28, 1972. After an NRC investigation opened in 1995, the plant stopped operating in 1996 because correcting the deficiencies was judged too costly. Permanent shutdown dates to August 1, 1997. The reactor vessel was barged to Barnwell, South Carolina in 2003, the containment building was demolished in 2004, and decommissioning was completed in 2005.
