The reactor first reached criticality in April 1994 and was connected to the grid on 29 August 1995. On 8 December 1995 a sodium leak and fire (INES level 1) forced it to shut down. It restarted in May 2010, but on 26 August 2010 a 3.3-tonne in-vessel transfer machine fell into the reactor vessel during fuel handling. The government decided to close the reactor in December 2016, and it was permanently shut down on 5 December 2017.
