Construction began in March 1967. The reactor, a General Electric boiling water reactor, reached criticality in March 1971 and was connected to the grid on 1 July 1971. A turbine oil fire damaged cables connected to safety systems in July 1971 and delayed commercial operation, which began on 6 November 1972. The plant was permanently shut down on 20 December 2019, and decommissioning began in January 2020.
