Construction of the plant began in 1971. Both units were pressurized water reactors supplied by Kraftwerk Union (Siemens). Unit 1 was connected to the grid on 3 June 1976, and Unit 2 on 3 January 1989. Unit 1 was taken off line on 17 March 2011 during the moratorium that followed the Fukushima accident, and it was permanently shut down on 6 August 2011. Unit 2 was permanently shut down on 15 April 2023 at the end of the German nuclear phase-out.
