Construction began in 1961. Reactor 1 reached criticality on 18 September 1967 and first generated electricity in November 1967, and reactor 2 began generating in April 1968. The station was officially opened on 10 June 1969 by Tony Benn. On 30 May 2007, a fire on a generator transformer bushing forced a shutdown, with no injuries or release of radiation. Reactor 2 was permanently shut down on 30 June 2011 and reactor 1 on 29 February 2012.
