The plant opened in 1952 as a government-owned facility run by a contractor, with Union Carbide as the first operator. It produced enriched uranium from 1952 until 2013. Trichloroethylene and traces of technetium-99 were found in nearby residential drinking water wells in 1988. Enrichment ceased on May 31, 2013, when the United States Enrichment Corporation ended its operations and returned the facility to the U.S. Department of Energy.
