Construction of units 1 and 2 began in 1974, and of units 3 and 4 in 1979. The units were first connected to the grid between December 1982 and August 1987. On 10 April 2003, an incident in the fuel cleaning system of unit 2 released krypton-85 and damaged fuel elements; it was first rated level 2 and then level 3 on the International Nuclear Event Scale. On 14 January 2014, Hungary and Rosatom signed an agreement for an expansion with two VVER-1200 reactors.
