The Pantex Ordnance Plant was authorized on February 24, 1942, as a conventional bomb plant for the Army Air Forces. It was deactivated when the war ended, and Texas Technological College bought the site in 1949 for $1. In 1951, at the request of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Army reclaimed the main plant and 10,000 acres for nuclear weapons production, and the AEC spent $25 million refurbishing it. Procter & Gamble operated the plant from 1951 to 1956, and Mason & Hanger from 1956 to 2001. The EPA listed Pantex as a Superfund site in 1994.
