Chemical mixing began on the property in the late 1940s. LUX Chemical Company bought Pemaco on July 27, 1988, and the site was abandoned on June 21, 1991. When county fire officials investigated in 1992 they found 31 underground tanks, six aboveground tanks and more than 400 drums. A fire in December 1993 destroyed the warehouse. The site was added to the National Priorities List in 1999. EPA signed its Record of Decision on January 13, 2005, and Maywood Riverfront Park opened in 2008.
