Construction began in the 1960s under an agreement with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for two CANDU heavy water reactors. Unit 1 was connected to the grid on 30 November 1972. Canada withdrew after India's 1974 nuclear test, and Unit 2 was completed by India alone, reaching the grid on 1 November 1980. Indian-designed 220 MW units 3 to 6 followed in 2000, 2000, 2009 and 2010, and a 700 MW Unit 7 in 2025.
