Construction began on 15 December 1979. The two units are Mitsubishi three-loop pressurized water reactors. Unit 1 was connected to the grid on 16 September 1983 and entered commercial operation in 1984, and Unit 2 was connected on 5 April 1985 and entered commercial operation in November 1985. After the 2011 Fukushima accident, Unit 1 restarted on 11 August 2015, the first Japanese reactor to do so after the nationwide shutdowns that followed.
