Both units were built by Hitachi. Construction of Unit 1, a BWR-5 boiling water reactor, began on 1 July 1989, and it reached the grid on 12 January 1993. Construction of Unit 2, an advanced boiling water reactor, began on 20 August 2001, and it was connected on 4 July 2005. On 18 June 1999 three control rods fell out of position during an inspection of Unit 1, and the reactor sustained an unintended chain reaction for about 15 minutes. The event was concealed until 15 March 2007.
