Groundbreaking was on September 6, 1954, and the plant cost $72.5 million and took 32 months to build. Duquesne Light Company operated it, and Naval Reactors and Westinghouse supplied the pressurized water reactor under Admiral Hyman Rickover. The reactor went critical on December 2, 1957. In 1977 a third core, a light water breeder using thorium and uranium-233, began operating. Operations ended on October 1, 1982. Dismantlement began in September 1985, and the reactor vessel was shipped to Hanford in December 1988.
