The laboratory was established in 1943 as Project Y, a secret Manhattan Project site for designing and assembling nuclear weapons. J. Robert Oppenheimer was its first director. The Trinity test took place near Alamogordo on July 16, 1945, and the Little Boy and Fat Man weapons, assembled at Los Alamos, were used in August 1945. It was renamed the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory on January 1, 1947, and became a national laboratory in name in 1981.
