Built during the 1950s to produce plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons, it began construction of R Reactor in June 1951. Five production reactors followed: R started in December 1953, P in February 1954, L in July 1954, K in October 1954 and C reached criticality in February 1955. R and C were shut down by the end of 1988, P in February 1991, and L was ordered permanently shut down in April 1993. The Defense Waste Processing Facility began vitrifying high-level waste in March 1996.
