Sizewell A had two Magnox reactors, built by British Nuclear Design and Construction, a consortium of English Electric, Babcock & Wilcox and Taylor Woodrow. Construction began on 1 April 1961, and both units entered service in 1966. They were permanently shut down on 31 December 2006. Sizewell B has a single pressurized water reactor. A public inquiry into its design ran from 1982 to 1985, construction began in the late 1980s, and it was first synchronized with the national grid on 14 February 1995.
