Its first two units are boiling water reactors built by General Electric and Bechtel under a 1963 agreement among India, the United States and the IAEA. Construction of those units began in the 1960s, and they were connected to the grid on 1 April and 5 May 1969. They were the first commercial nuclear power units in India. Construction of two Indian-designed 540 MW heavy water reactors began in 2000, with Unit 4 reaching the grid on 4 June 2005 and Unit 3 on 15 June 2006.
