A contract worth $87 million was awarded to Federal Cartridge Corporation in 1941 under the Lend-Lease Act, and production of .30, .50 and .45 caliber ammunition began in March 1942. The plant closed in September 1945, reopened as the Twin Cities Arsenal from 1946 to 1950, ran at full production during the Korean War until 1957, and was renamed TCAAP in 1963. It operated again from 1965 to 1976. Trichloroethylene from the plant was found in New Brighton's water supply in 1981, and the site was added to the Superfund National Priorities List in September 1983.
