The plant was designed with Soviet VVER-1000 (V-320) pressurized water reactors, and construction began in the 1980s. After the Velvet Revolution in 1990, work on the planned Units 3 and 4 was stopped. In the 1990s Westinghouse, working with the Czech regulator and the IAEA, changed the design of the reactor core and fuel, and the government approved completion of the plant. Unit 1 reached first criticality in December 2000 and was connected to the grid on 21 December 2000. Unit 2 was connected on 29 December 2002.
