China and Russia signed a nuclear cooperation agreement in 1992 that became the basis for the plant, and regulators approved the initial design in 1997. Construction of Units 1 and 2, Russian VVER-1000 pressurized water reactors, began in October 1999 and October 2000. They were connected to the grid on 12 May 2006 and 14 May 2007. Units 3 and 4 are VVER-1000/428M units, begun in December 2012 and September 2013. Units 5 and 6 are Chinese ACPR-1000 units, begun in December 2015 and September 2016. Construction of the VVER-1200 Units 7 and 8 began in May 2021 and February 2022.
